The past three decades have witnessed an explosion of interest, research and writing on visual culture within the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Journal of Visual Culture has led the way in shaping how, historically and theoretically, we engage critically with ways of seeing, practices of looking, regimes of vision, and the epistemological and ontological questions that both underpin and challenge our notions of the visual, and visual culture itself. The Journal publishes contributions from academics, educators, curators, artists, and a wide range of historians, theorists, and practitioners from numerous disciplines, by way of diverse methodologies, and on a multitude of histories and geographies, always with its focus on a critical engagement with visual cultures.
